Refund Rules – Indian Railways Refund Charges

Unused Tickets with no reservation:  In case of cancellation of the ticket for which no reservation for seat or birth is done and it is submitted within three hours past the actual departure of the train or for a cancellation of ticket valid for the whole day and submitted within three hours past the actual departure of the train, then refund is made for such ticket after deducting Rs 20 per passenger for clerikage.

RefundUnused tickets with reservation:  In case of ticket where reservation is done and then it is submitted for cancellation then refund is done after deducting the cancellation charges.  If a ticket is submitted 24 hours prior to scheduled departure of train then cancellation charges for A.C First Class and Executive Class are Rs 70, for A.C. 2 Tier, A.C. 3 Tier, First class and A.C CC is Rs 60, for sleeper class is Rs 40 and for second class is Rs 20.

If the ticket is submitted within 24 hours and up to four hours prior the scheduled departure of the train, cancellation charges are 25% of the journey fare which is subject to the minimum flat rate.

If the ticket is submitted within four hours prior the scheduled departure and up to 3 hours (destination station is 200 KM), up to six hours (destination station is between 200 KM and 500KM), up to twelve hours (destination more than 500 KM) after the departure of train then cancellation charges are 50% of the journey fate which is subject to the minimum flat rate.

Rules for RefundAfter the expiry of the mentioned period, no refund is granted at station for cancellation of tickets. In such cases where the night train leaves between 21:00 hours and 06:00 hours then refunds will be granted at the station within the specified time limit or within four hours of railway reservation office opening.

Unused waitlisted or RAC tickets: In case of waitlisted or RAC ticket is submitted for cancellation then no cancellation charges will be given up to 3 hours (destination station is 200 KM), up to six hours (destination station is between 200 KM and 500KM), up to twelve hours (destination more than 500 KM) after the train departure except for deduction for Rs 20 for clerkage.

Refund on partially used tickets: In case of partially utilized tickets where in a passenger ends his journey enroute, the station master issue a ticket deposit receipt and the refund is managed by the chief commercial manager (Refunds).

Rules for RefundRefund due to late running of trains: In this case there is no cancellation charge or clerk age is applied and all passengers are entitled for refund of complete fare. It includes the passengers having Reserved, RAC, and Waitlisted tickets.

It is applied in cases where journey is not undertaken because of late running of the train by over 3 hours of the scheduled departure. Here the ticket needs to be submitted with in the maximum time limits.

Refund in case of unavailable accommodation: In this case complete refund of fares is granted where the railway administration is not capable to give accommodation for any cause whatsoever to passengers having reserved tickets. Here the tickets need to be cancelled within three hours of train departure.

In case of accidents, breaches or a flood, if the train is cancelled then complete refund is granted within three days that exclude the scheduled departure day.

Refund in case of failure of Air Conditioning equipment: In this case when the air-conditioning did not work for a portion of the travel, the refund is granted at the destination station provided the certificate from the guard is shown and the ticket is offered within twenty hours of the train arrival.

Rules for Refund

In case of AC first class, the difference among the fares of AC first class and first class mail is refunded. In case of AC 2 tier sleeper or AC 3 tier sleeper class, the difference amid the fares of AC 2 tier/AC 3 tiers and the sleeper class mail /express is refunded.

In case of AC chair car class the difference amid the fares of AC chair car class and second class mail/express is refunded. In case of Executive class of Shatabdi trains, the difference amid the fares of notified executive and first class mail/express is refunded.

Break Journey Rules

Indian Railways offers the facility of break journey for those passengers who hold the single journey tickets for distance of over 500kms.  These passengers are permitted to break journey only once for maximum of two days at any station en-route. In order to avail this facility, one needs to travel 500 Kms from the starting station.

Break JourneyIn case the ticket is for over 1000Kms, then the passenger is permitted to break the journey twice at any station en route. For calculating the number of days for first break of journey, day of arrival and departure are excluded.  It is mandatory in any case to get the ticket endorsed by the station manager /ticket collector at the en route station where the break journey is planned.

Break journey facility is not offered for Rajdhani/Shatbadi/Jan shatbadi express trains. Passenger need to intimate regarding the break journey details at the time of original booking.  Two break journeys allowed for passengers travelling over 1000 Kms according to their choice for the maximum period of two days at each station en route of break of journey.

For example if a passenger holding the ticket of single journey for 600 kms is allowed once to break journey for the period of two days once he covered the distance of over 500 kms. In case a passenger has single journey ticket of 2000 Kms he is permitted to break journey twice after travelling the distance of 500 Kms from starting station.

Rules of Break JourneyIn cases where a passenger detrains at a station en-route in order to catch a connecting train, it is not regarded as a break journey considering the halt remains less than 24 hours.  Ticket endorsement should include the Station Master’s Initials, date and Station Code.  Also passengers opting for breaking their journey except as mentioned above are required to surrender their tickets at the station where they break their journey.

Luggage Rules, Luggage Booking Rules, Fares

Indian Railways has prescribed certain rules regarding carrying the luggage in trains during travel. Luggage which cannot be completely and legibly identified in English or Hindi language is not permitted for carriage by train. One needs to ensure that the luggage should be securely packed otherwise it will not be permitted for carriage and booking unless the sender or his agent submits a forwarding note about the defects or improper packing.

Luggage RulesLuggage needs to be presented at least 30 minutes before scheduled train departure at the booking office in case the owner is travelling by the same train. In case a passenger is seeking advance railway reservation then he is allowed to book the luggage in advance at the same time.

If a package is weighs above 100 Kgs or exceeds 1m*1m*0.7m in outside measurement then bulky surcharge is applied to it. Bulky surcharge is usually levied at twice the normal rate. Nasty articles, inflammable, explosive, dangerous articles, empty gas cylinders, acids and other corrosive substance are not allowed to be booked as luggage.

The outside measurement of 100 cms. x 60 cms x 25 cms of suitcase, trunks  and boxes are permitted in the passenger compartments to be carried as personal luggage.  Merchandized items are not allowed for carriage and booking as personal luggage in the compartment.

Patients under medical supervision with certificate are allowed to carry oxygen cylinder with its stand in all classes.  Oxygen cylinder and its stand are granted free allowance of luggage.  In case of luggage of larger dimension, brake van is used to carry it.

The Maximum quantity permitted including free allowance, free allowance, marginal allowance for the various classes of accommodation are as follows :

Ac first Class : The Free allowance is 70 Kgs, marginal allowance is 15 Kgs and Maximum quantity permitted including free allowance is 150 Kgs.

Indian Railways Luggage RulesAC 2-Tier sleeper/First class : The Free allowance is 50 Kgs, marginal allowance is 10 Kgs and Maximum quantity permitted including free allowance is 100 Kgs.

AC 3-tier sleeper/AC chair car : The Free allowance is 40 Kgs, marginal allowance is 10 Kgs and Maximum quantity permitted including free allowance is 40 Kgs.

Sleeper class : The Free allowance is 40 Kgs, marginal allowance is 10 Kgs and Maximum quantity permitted including free allowance is 80 Kgs.

Second class : The Free allowance is 35 Kgs, marginal allowance is 10 Kgs and Maximum quantity permitted including free allowance is 70 Kgs.

Indian Railways Change of Name Rules

As per the rules of the Indian Railways if a passengers is holding the confirmed railway reservation then a berth or a seat is not transferable to other person and it is to be used by the same person. However Chief Reservation Supervisor of chief stations is allowed by Railway Administration to allow the change of name of a passenger holding the confirmed reservation in his name in few circumstances.

Rules for Change of NameIn case if the passenger is a Government Employee and he is going for duty and suitable authority, then he can make a apply for change of name in writing and he is required to apply 24 hours prior to the scheduled departure of trains

If  a passenger has made a request in writing 24 hours prior the scheduled train departure then reservation in his name can be transferred to an additional member of his family that may include Father, Mother, Sister, Son, Brother, Husband, Daughter, and Wife.

In case of passengers who are students of a standard educational institution and want to change the name then the Head of the institution is required to apply for it in writing 48 hours prior the scheduled train departure and then reservation can be transferred to an, that the reservation made in the name of any student be transferred to other student of the same institute.

Indian Railways Rules for Change of NameIn case where the passengers belong to a marriage party then head of the party is required to apply for the change of name in writing 48 hours prior the scheduled train departure then reservation made can be transferred to other member of the marriage party.

In case where the passengers belong to cadets of National Cadet Corps then head of the group needs to apply in writing at least 24 hours prior the train departure and reservation made can be transferred to any other cadet.
