The Northern Railway is one of the key and largest Railway Zones which is administered by Indian Railways. It is being regarded as a pioneer in railways innovation and renewal. Most of the technological advancements and path breaking innovation in Indian Railways have started in Northern Railways.
Northern Railway is the first to initiate the computerized passenger railway reservation system and was forefront in introducing the first diesel and electric locomotive simulators in India.
The Northern railway route track stretches about 6807 km which is largest among all the railway zones. The headquarters of the Northern Railway is located at Baroda House, New Delhi with divisions headquarters at five cities including Delhi, Lucknow, Ferozpur, Moradabad, Ambala .
History of Northern Railway: Northern Railway was consisted of a grand eight-divisional zone earlier including Allahabad, Ferozpur, Lucknow, Jodhpur, Delhi,Bikaner, Ambala and Moradabad that covers majority of North India. Later on the re-organisation of zones resulted in five divisional zones. The beginning of Northern Railway took place in 1952 when three divisions of East Indian Railway, the Jodhpur Railway, the Eastern Punjab Railway and Bikaner Railway were merged together.
Presently, Northern Railway is proudly serving the eight Indian states including Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Jammu and Kashmir, Punjab, Haryana, Delhi, Himachal Pradesh and the Union Territory of Chandigarh.
There are various significant facilities offered by Northern Railway including Self Dial Telephone Reservation Enquiry Booths (I ASK), Interactive Voice Response System (IVRS), Electronic Display System, Automatic Teller Machines (ATM), Route Relay Interlocking (RRI) systems in the major rail stations, Computerized Passenger Reservation System, Reservation Availability Position Information Display (RAPID), PNR Status can be checked online, Catering Facilities, Retiring Rooms,etc.
Northern railway operates some of the major trains including Shatabdi Express, Rajdhani Express, Mussorie Express, Sadbhavna Express, Swaraj Express, etc. It also covers the some of the famous tourist destinations of India like Pahankot, Shimla, Ludhiana, Jammu, Haridwar, Moradabad, Lucknow, Chandigarh, Dehradun, Delhi and Amritsar.
